Cautrell Brings His Linoleum Prints and Woodcuts To The Laurel Tree |
|
Mar 12, 2009 -- Dan Cautrell, well-known local artist, carver, and print-maker has brought his work to the Laurel Tree in Duvall. Cautrell, who
identifies himself as an “Artist of the People”, has created a number of public works and personal works with strong, enduring public appeal. His public works, mostly carvings, featuring strong lines and visually striking imagery. Examples include the Duvall Car Park sign and upcoming 18 foot cedar planks he has carved for the Main Street Redevelopment Project. Cautrell features both woodcuts and linoleum cuts in the gallery. He meticulously cuts negative images into his plates – removed material becomes white. Remaining material becomes black. The results are prints that are reductive in style, but rich in imagery, leaving the admirer able to examine how the intentionality of each stroke comprises the whole.
Woodcuts and linoleum prints are a lesser-known print-making technique where images are printed from images carved into wood and linoleum plates respectively. Woodcuts or wood-block printing has a long rich history in both Europe and Japan. M.C. Escher's famous 'Metamorphosis' series were woodcuts.
Cautrell refined his craft for several years in Riverside California before making Duvall and the Pacific Northwest his home where he resides with his family. Cautrell can be reached at
